Halikiopoulos-Mantzaros, Nikolaos; Dionyssiou Solomou, Hymn to Freedom, music composed by Nikolaos Mantzaros, London: Clayton 1873. Facsimile edition . edited by G. Laganas. Athens: Phoenix publications, 2002.

This new acquisition presents great historical and musicological value.

It is a through composition of the entire text of the hymn for four-part all-male chorus and piano. This particular edition contains nearly the complete poem by Dionysios Solomos. (only one stanza is missing out of 158).  In the 139 pages of sheet music we can follow (observe) the complete setting to music by Nicolaos Halkiopoulos-Mantzaros. Characteristic of the through-composition of the work are the 25 musical "episodes", each of which is made up by an irregular number of stanzas. They all maintain the original musical basis despite the changes in the melody. The only exception is in the last episode which according to the composer is a Fuga Reale.

The book was printed in 30 copies only, in observance of 130 years from the composer’s death. The copy of the Music Library bears the number VIII.

The book is part of the library’s rare collection and can be used by researchers on the library’s premises.
