Google Scholar (http://www.scholar.google.com)

The Library’s selection for this month refers to a very important development, which connects technology and the internet with scientific research in a spectacular way. The news is stirring up a lot of interest in the world of libraries as well.

It concerns a new service, which is being introduced by the Google Search Engine (www.google.com) called Google Scholar. Scientists and researchers can, for the first time, rely on the results provided by a search engine and pursue their research on the web. Google Scholar has indexed a huge amount of scientific material (books, theses, articles). Search results are provided through relevance ranking, which takes into account the full text of the article, the author of the article, the publication in which the article appeared and how often it has been cited in scholarly literature. Google Scholar does not always provide access to the full text of the citations but the information on the bibliography and its availability is a vital tool in the hands of the researcher.

The service is at the experimental stage (beta) and consequently, changes and improvements are taking place on a daily basis.

More information on Google Scholar is available at its website.
